Among America's Greatest Golf Courses

For many golfers the iconic candy-striped lighthouse behind the 18th green of the Harbour Town Golf Links is something close to nirvana. But, with over 400 golf holes available on the island, that Sea Pines sight is truly just one of many.

Our observations on golf-by-the-season

Spring months of March through May are ideal, but The Heritage Classic in early- to mid-April creates expensive and crowded conditions, especially at the Sea Pines Resort

Summer is Hilton Head’s high season for tourism – and it is hot. Golf Magazine says of “summer [that] golf is doable, but high heat and humidity, late afternoon thunderstorms and a plethora of bugs can be problematic.”

Autumn is one of the best times of the year to play golf and other outdoor sports on Hilton Head Island. Summer’s heat has faded, crowds are largely gone, the snowbirds haven’t arrived yet and the greens fees are headed south.

Winter is a pleasant extension of autumn, but a bit cooler. Southerners call it “cold” and Northerners call it “wonderful.”-Fairways are open since the vacationers have gone home, the courses are not crowded and greens fees are a good bit lower, and don’t forget a sweater or two.

Golf Magazine consider several of Hilton Head Island’s offering as “must-play courses,” and here’s the publications list, with ranges of greens fees.
